What Is the YAC Summit?

The 10th Annual Texas Youth Advisory Commission Summit is a two-day statewide event sponsored by the Texas Municipal League and the City of DeSoto. The 2010 Summit will be held in DeSoto on February 27-28. This year’s Summit theme will be “Changin’ Da Game.”

Summit Purpose

The YAC Summit is an opportunity for cities, schools, and community youth groups to share the experiences of their programs and the positive impact that the programs have had locally. The Summit is organized to promote a fun environment for youth and city leaders to learn from and work with each other. Adults and students will leave with a greater appreciation of their own programs and new ideas to move their group forward in coming years.

If your city doesn’t have a YAC, you are invited to attend the Summit and learn more about how a YAC can help your city. Learn the basics of creating a YAC and make connections with cities that have successful programs.

Why Should Our City Attend?

This is the chance for your YAC members to show off their successes from the past year, share their goals for the coming year, hear from inspirational speakers, and network with other YACs. The Summit is a great way to inspire your future leaders to transform their surroundings and perspective to achieve their goals and aspirations.

A special roundtable “bragging and sharing” session will be offered for city leaders and adult sponsors. Bring your ideas, questions, and accomplishments to share with others.

General Information

The Summit will be held at the DeSoto Civic Center, located at 211 East Pleasant Run Road in DeSoto, Texas. Registration will begin at 8.00 a.m. on Saturday, February 27.

Registration Fee

The Summit registration fee is $20 per person (youth and adults). The registration fee includes a t-shirt; information packet; Saturday breakfast, lunch, and dinner; and Sunday breakfast. The registration deadline is Friday, February 12, 2010.

Display Table

Established YAC programs will have the opportunity to show what their program is all about. Create a display and bring examples—photos, newspaper articles, brochures, guidelines from programs, etc. Materials will be on display during the Summit. If you are interested in a display table, please check the box on the registration form.

City Pins

To build unity and communication between cities, the students will be encouraged to exchange city pins throughout the Summit. We recommend that you bring at least 300 pins for your students to distribute.

Community Service Project

This year’s community service project will be to make health kits that will contribute to the Haiti relief effort. Distributed through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the health kits are sent to those that have been forced to leave their homes as a result of a disaster.

We are asking that your youth group bring the following items for the kits:

  • hand towels (15" x 25" up to 17" x 27", No kitchen towels)
  • washcloths
  • combs (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
  • nail files or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
  • bath-size bars of soap (3 oz. and up)
  • toothbrushes (single brushes only in original wrapper; no child-size brushes)
  • adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages (6 bandages per kit)
  • Cash donation to purchase toothpaste (UMCOR will purchase toothpaste to be added to health kits to ensure that the product does not expire before they are sent. The cost of the toothpaste is $1.00 a tube.)

The health kits will be assembled at the summit.
