NEW MINIMUM WAGE POSTERS
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) establishes a minimum wage for private and public employees, including cities. Except in very limited situations, non-exempt city employees must be paid the minimum wage. As most employers are aware, the federal minimum wage for covered, non-exempt employees increased to $5.85 per hour effective July 24, 2007. The minimum wage will increase to $6.55 per hour on July 24, 2008, and to $7.25 per hour on July 24, 2009.
A number of federal workplace posters have been revised to reflect the changes in this law. All updated posters are available at www.dol.gov/compliance/topics/posters.htm. The applicable revised posters are the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Minimum Wage Poster and the related poster for State & Local Government Employees. The FLSA Minimum Wage poster is also available in Chinese and Spanish. The poster describing Employee Rights for Workers with Disabilities/Special Minimum Wage has also been updated to reflect the minimum wage change.
These posters can be printed from the Department of Labor’s Poster Web page. Revised posters are also available free of charge from the DOL at 1-888-972-7332. If you are not sure which posters must be posted by your city, please contact the TML Legal Department at (512) 231-7400 or at legal@tml.org.
