Terrell Blodgett
Terrell Blodgett is the Mike Hogg Professor Emeritus in Urban Management at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin.
Terrell’s professional career include, 13 years as the Mike Hogg Professor in Urban Management, Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, at The University of Texas at Austin, 13 years as Principal-in-Charge of Governmental Consulting, Peat, Marwick, Mitchell, and 4 years as Administrative Assistant for Governor John Connally. Terrell has also served as City Manager for the Cities of Garland and Waco. He served several positions for the City of Austin which include: Assistant City Manager, Administrative Assistant to City Manager, and Personnel Director. He was also a Research Associate for the Institute of Public Affairs, at The University of Texas at Austin.
Terrell is a retired Lieutenant Colonel for the United States Army, serving in World War II. He has also been active in many related civic and professional activities which include: Board member for the International City Management Association’s Fund for the Profession, Executive Director for the Governor’s Task Force on Revenue, Management Study Consultant for the American Education Complex College District, City of Austin-Travis County Action for Metro Government (AMEGO), Board Member for the Austin-Travis County United Way, Board Member, Management Study Consultant for the State Preservation Board and the Representatives Business Office. He has served as Chairman for the National Civic League and National Civic League’s Model City Charter Revision Committee. He has served as the Administrator for the Public Executive Institute and the Chairman for the Model City Charter Revision Project, Chief Consultant for the State of Texas Legislative Audit Committee. Terrell was elected to National Academy of Public Administration and has directed more than 100 organization and management studies for Peat Marwick.
Terrell has been recognized throughout his career with various awards that include: Honorary Life Director for the National Civic League. Honoree of Terrell Blodgett Endowment for Graduate Study in Urban Management and Finance, Distinguished Service Award, Texas Association of Regional Councils, Regional Service Award, Austin Society for Public Administration, Professional Development Award, LBJ Foundation Annual Excellence Award Recipient.
He is the author of City Government That Works: The History of Council-Manager Government in Texas (Texas City Management Association). This book is currently being updated to include a history of city government in El Paso. He also authored, Texas Home Rule Charters, published by Texas Municipal League.
Terrell is the first Distinguished Member of the Texas City Management Association (TCMA) and TCMA has recently established the Terrell Blodgett Academician Award which will be presented to an academician who has made a significant contribution to the formal education of students pursing careers in local government.
